DREPUNG LOSELING MONASTERY

The progress made with regards to the degrees of attention and concentration is fundamental to the studies made in Drepung Loseling, These abilities are used daily in the monastery in processes such as the dialect of debate, the complete memorization of texts and studies, the Shamata meditation (SHAMATA or Shine: a meditation method that aims to develop the attention span at a specific point) and discipline.

These tools have been developed throughout several years, therefore showing a better comprehension of the concepts being studied.

In the last decade, motivated by the S.S. Dalai lama, the monastery had started to encourage the pursuit of greater scientific knowledge. Science classes are now being offered at the monastery thus establishing a sort of scientific agreement along with spiritual knowledge..

The monastery was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden, one of the main disciples of Je Tsongkhapa, founder of the school of Gelug.

With the chinese invasion in 1959, hundreds of monks headed to India in exile and with them the Drepung Loseling Monastery was relocated to Mundgod, Karnakata, in order to be closer to the Tibetian refugee camps. For four years, the monks worked in the jungle, prepared the fields for cultivation and added new buildings. After having overcome many difficulties, the new Drepung Loseling Monastery has started to reestablish its program of Traditonal Tibetian Buddhist studies.
